Current Total People Safeguarding Trends – July

Accessing Inappropriate Websites
There has been an increase in the number of reports of learners who are accessing inappropriate websites using Total People computers, at Total People sites – often during session activities.

Can you remind all learners that part of their learner agreement is that they use the internet facility responsibly. Internet use is monitored and inappropriate use can be a discipline offence.

Advice and Guidance
– Good practice is to be aware of what your learners are accessing in your class.

– Maybe educate your learners on their digital footprint and the potential consequences of their searches.

Transgender Learners
There has been an increase in the number of transgender learners joining Total People.

This is great news. There are a couple of useful resources to help with inclusion of transgender learners on our safeguarding page

Advice and Guidance
Check out our One Minute Guide section on our safeguarding page and you will see a
trans inclusion toolkit. (Giving guidance for educational establishments).

Alcohol Awareness
The Safeguarding team has a teacher manual and guidance with lots of resources from the alcohol Education Trust.

Suitable for ages 11 – 18 (and over) there is a scheme of work, DVD, picture and story led activities aimed at opening up discussion about alcohol use.

Its main aim is “to delay the onset of drinking and reducing alcohol related harm by resilience and life skills for 11 to 18 year olds.”

Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)
There are a steady number of learner concerns raised regarding the sexual exploitation of teenagers who are Total People learners.

There are a number of free on line courses that are available to raise your awareness and we are keen to explore if there is a call for greater training of staff in this area.

Sector Visits
Our Safeguard Coordinator is in the process of visiting all sectors via their team meetings. He wants to update everyone on the current position regarding safeguarding within the organisation and gauge feelings from the recent Ofsted report.

While safeguarding was deemed to be effective, there are areas Ofsted felt we needed to improve in, particularly around learners’ awareness of British Values and how radicalisation and extremism might affect them. Your thoughts would be welcome.
